During National Volunteer Week, the Mater Private Hospital Brisbane celebrates Rose Graham, a 73-year-old volunteer and two-time pancreatic cancer survivor who provides invaluable support to patients battling cancer at the Mater Cancer Care Centre in South Brisbane.

Rose's journey into the world of cancer care began unexpectedly when she was diagnosed with a lemon-sized tumour in her pancreas while volunteering at the very centre that would come to save her life.
Under the expert care of oncologist Dr. Vikram Jain and surgeon Dr. Mehan Siriwardhane, Rose underwent intensive chemotherapy and a major surgery known as the Whipple procedure in 2019. Despite the daunting prognosis typically associated with pancreatic cancer, Rose faced her treatment with the same courage she encourages in the patients she supports.
Healing Through Helping
Rose's role at the Mater Cancer Care Centre involves giving hand and foot massages to oncology patients, a simple yet profound act of kindness that offers relief and a distraction from the rigours of cancer treatment.
"I don’t often tell patients what I have been through, I focus on supporting and helping them to take their minds off their treatment," Rose explained. Her experience as both a volunteer and a patient provides her with a unique perspective and deep empathy, qualities that make her an invaluable part of the Mater community.
A Return of the Cancer
In a disheartening turn, routine scans last year revealed that Rose's cancer had returned. However, her resolve did not waver. After three weeks of radiation treatment earlier this year, her doctors delivered the hopeful news that there were no signs of cancer in her body. Rose's story is not just one of personal survival but is also a source of inspiration for the many patients she meets.
During National Volunteer Week (20 to 26 May 2024), Rose's contributions are especially celebrated.
"Volunteering at Mater is a very fulfilling way of being able to support other patients," Rose remarked, highlighting the therapeutic aspect of her volunteer work not just for the patients but for herself as well.

Community Impact
Judy Johnson, Senior Manager of Mater Volunteers, praised Rose for her empathy and commitment.
"As a hand and feet massage volunteer, she provides companionship and comfort," Ms. Johnson noted. "Patients say the massage makes the long hours easier to bear and helps with stress and anxiety. Rose arrives with a smile and leaves with an even bigger one."
