As some live music venues in Brisbane are shutting their doors, one local music industry veteran hopes to keep the scene alive through Spin and Groove Records, a new record store in Newstead.

Damien Brown, with almost 30 years experience as a musician, sales rep, venue booker and booking agent, launched Spin and Groove Records on the 11th of May 2024. The store is located next to Newstead Brewery inside Urban Jungle Studios.
For Brown, opening a record store has been a teenage dream. “To me record stores should be a welcoming place to hang out, find new music, meet other music fans and musicians and hopefully come away with that album you’ve been wanting to get from your favourite band,” he said.

In addition to a wide range of music across all genres, the store will stock band merchandise, turntables, and physical releases from local artists. Brown hopes to host in-store performances, listening parties, and artist signings.
“With the unfortunate decline in small and medium live music venues this is a way for me to stay involved and start a new venture,” said Brown, a Newstead resident.“This area is growing quickly and very progressive and to me deserves a record store.”
The opening of Spin and Groove comes just weeks after the announced closing of the iconic Fortitude Valley live music venue The Zoo. Brown believes the location inside the creative community of Urban Jungle Studios, along with the neighbouring Newstead Brewery, is the perfect fit.

Among the stock, Brown plans to keep titles from his all-time favourite band Kyuss on hand. “My aim with the store is to provide a wide range of music for all tastes rather than specialise in certain styles or genres,” he said.
